My background stencil designs tend to be very organic and fairly detailed, and I love to airbrush them in multiple colors, as you can see in the image below (i.e., the cookies in the first three quadrants). But they’re just as lovely, and even faster to airbrush, if you limit yourself to one or two colors (i.e., the cookie in the fourth quadrant).

By contrast, my partner’s background stencils tend to have simpler, more uniform repeating patterns, which are quite amenable to one color – and are perhaps the easiest type to tackle if you’re just starting out.
