Julia continues her latest botanical series with these cookies inspired by the very beauties climbing her own garden arbor. (Or we should say “arbors”; she grows many varieties of clematis!) This edible variety is made entirely of royal icing transfers, some contoured and others stenciled, like the delicate trellis in the background. After drying, each piece is individually airbrushed and then assembled together on the cookie to create this masterpiece. A labor of love, without question, but definitely a project anyone can do with Julia’s detailed step-by-step instructions.
Ready for it?! The results of the 2024 Julia M. Usher’s Cookie Art Competition™ are now in! But first, a few observations about this year’s competition.
To Julia’s great pleasure, the return to an online format allowed entries to flow in from all over the world, with nearly 40% coming from countries other than the United States. Further, more registrants than ever stuck to their guns and landed cookies on the virtual judging table, resulting in an uptick in entries over the last two years and a judging process that was tougher than ever. While learning and growth are the true objectives of Julia’s competition, the prizes are, without a doubt, the best in the business and, in 2024, they set another competition record, topping out at just over $25,500 USD! All in all, Julia couldn’t be more thrilled about the caliber of entries, or more thankful for her amazing team of judges and sponsors.

As always, Julia’s 2024 class schedule is jam-packed and super exciting! Her in-person classes will take her as far afield as Australia, but she will also be placing more emphasis on the home front with return appearances at online events, such as The Bake Fest and Cookie-A-Thon, and an expanded schedule of Zoom classes.
