Julia’s Thanksgiving 2004 went down as the most catastrophic in Usher family history. First, her local organic turkey farmer went out of business, leaving Julia short one rather important ingredient. Second, a painstakingly sliced onion side dish met its demise on the kitchen floor (ever since, this recipe has been referred to as “Onion Tumble”). Third, power went out just as the store-bought replacement bird went in the oven. And, fourth, in all of this chaos and confusion, Julia forgot to make gravy, much to her guests’ obvious consternation! In her October 2006 edition of Prep School for Sauce magazine – for which she styled this photo – Julia recalled this fateful meal, and reminded readers through her foolproof gravy recipe that this Thanksgiving staple is too simple to ever forget.
