Overview: If you’ve ever wondered how to get richly layered airbrushed and stenciled cookies sans spotting, underspray, or overspray, then this demo at the wonderful Canada’s Baking and Sweets Show is for you! Julia will provide an A-to-Z intensive look at what it takes to create picture-perfect multicolor, layered stencil designs like those for which she is best known. She’ll first begin with simple two- to three-color Halloween designs (similar to those in photos #1 through #3 in the gallery below*) and then advance to cookies with up to six or seven colors (similar to those in photos #4 and #5)! Along the way, she’ll share her preferred airbrush system features, and her tried-and-true triggering, masking, color blending, and stencil-securing tricks.

*Note: Julia will not demo every cookie shown in the gallery below due to time constraints, but she will demo roughly three Halloween and/or fall cookies along the same lines.

Skill Level: Suitable for everyone, though airbrush enthusiasts will particularly enjoy.

Prerequisites: No cookie decorating or airbrushing experience is necessary.

What You’ll Learn (~5 Techniques):

  • Airbrush systems and handling 101 (key system components; handling dual- vs. single-action systems; triggering basics; troubleshooting common issues such as speckled spray or spotting, underspray, and overspray; and airbrush cleaning)
  • Airbrush shading, particularly for simple two-color designs
  • Precision-control airbrushing, particularly for multicolor designs
  • Layered stenciling using Julia’s innovative Dynamic Duos™ stencil sets
  • Color blending 101, as applied to multicolor designs
