Overview: After appearances at The Bake Fest every year since its inception in 2021, Julia happily returns to teach cookie decorating in 2024! Not familiar with The Bake Fest? It’s the world’s largest online baking and decorating event, and it features some of Julia’s favorite sweets experts covering topics that range from bread and macaron making to cookie and cake decorating. Julia adores the cross-disciplinary nature of this event, which is why she’s taught at it for so many years running. Plus, it provides a rare opportunity to connect with like-minded sweets professionals who are 100 percent-committed to helping you grow your skills and business.

Julia’s hands-on class at this event spans two days (about 3 ½ hours in total), and, in it, you’ll make her popular 3-D spring topiary cookie on a lifelike brick patio (also a cookie!). This project is perfect for bridal shower and springtime garden party favors, or centerpieces when arranged en masse. Along the way, you’ll get lots of practice with several different cookie decorating and assembly techniques (see list below). On Day One, long lead-time items that require icing drying time, such as the topiary pots and roses, will be made; on Day Two, the project parts will magically come together with Julia’s expert guidance, and finishing touches will be added to complete the wow-effect!

Skill Level: All! While this project might look complicated, Julia will tailor her pace and instruction so that even beginning and intermediate decorators can follow along.

Prerequisites: Some experience with royal icing is recommended, but not necessary.

What You’ll Learn (~11 Techniques):

  • Contoured cookies
  • Embossed cookies
  • Dipping with royal icing
  • Sponging
  • Various cookie crumb effects (i.e., moss and dirt)
  • Royal icing roses
  • Wafer paper bows, ribbons, and butterflies
  • Piping on contoured cookies
  • 3-D multi-level assembly
  • 3-D sandwiched assembly
  • Spackling and crumb-coating

Schedule and Other Notes: Julia’s class times are May 18 (4:30 pm – 5:55 pm CDT) and May 19 (9:00 am –  10:55 am CDT) but be sure to check out the other fabulous sessions throughout the event. And, remember, students must supply their own tools and cookies if they want to follow along with Julia. Julia will provide detailed supply and prep lists in advance. Stay tuned!
